Most students in Hunterdon got a “snow day” today for Halloween, although some of the county’s smallest schools opened as usual. The only high school to open in the county today is small South Hunterdon, which had a delayed opening.
JCP&L doesn’t expect service to be fully restored in Hunterdon until Friday, Nov. 4, although it anticipates that 95% of customers will have power again by the end of the day on Nov. 3. At one o’clock today, JCP&L said that 31,283 customers were still without power, with large concentrations of outages in the stretch from Flemington to Lambertville and in the Frenchtown, Glen Gardner and High Bridge mailing address areas.
The power company is asking everyone to treat “all downed wires as live and dangerous.”
At least one school — High Bridge — said the closure was because the elementary and middle schools are without power.
Students in Bloomsbury, Clinton — which includes Glen Gardner children — and Stockton all opened on time. Lambertville and West Amwell schools each had delayed openings.
Other schools were closed, including all of the county’s large districts. Frenchtown and Union Township announced on their websites that Halloween festivities will be held tomorrow, Nov. 1.
Most schools attributed the closings to power outages and “storm damage” or impassable roads.
Students at Lambertville and Stockton schools are expected to continue annual traditions and parade in their communities outdoors in their Halloween costumes today, Lambertville at 1:30 p.m. and Stockton at 1:45 p.m.
High Bridge announced trick or treating has been postponed to 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Lambertville has announced trick-or-treating is still on for 5-8 p.m. today, Oct. 31.
