How to Get a UK Student Visa

Want to study in the UK? Find out whether you need to apply for a UK student visa, and how the application process works.
UK visa requirements and general immigration criteria are managed by the UK Border Agency (UKBA), which has an easy-to-navigate site to help you determine whether you need a UK student visa. While Swiss nationals and those from the EU/European Economic Area (EEA) states are treated as home students in the UK, all other international students are likely to need a visa to study in the UK.

Types of UK student visa

If you’re doing a short course or an 11-month English language course, and are over 18 years old, you may be eligible for the student visitor visa. This is valid up to 6 months for short courses and can be extended for a stay of up to 11 months for English language courses. If you’re doing a longer course, you’ll need to make sure your chosen institution is on the UKBA list of trusted sponsors. You can either apply for a Tier 4 (Child) student visa (if you’re aged 4-17) or a Tier 4 (General) student visa for those aged 18 and over.
You may also apply for entry to the UK as a prospective student. To do this you must prove you have been in touch with some UK universities. This visa will be valid for six months, during which time you may study – though it is advisable to upgrade to a full student visa sooner rather than later.

UK student visa requirements
Your course provider may be willing to help you to apply for a UK student visa once you have been offered a place on a course, so it’s always worth asking. You can apply for the visa up to three months in advance of the start date of your course. Make sure to allow plenty of time, as average visa processing times may vary.
UK student visas are awarded on a points-based system. In order to meet all the UK student visa requirements, you’ll need to provide: 

• Details of your passport
• A recent photograph
• A 'Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’ (CAS) form from your course provider (worth 30 points)
• Proof of adequate English language skills, through one of the UKBA-approved English language tests (or perhaps through an alternate test or Skype interview with your course provider)
• Proof you have financial support throughout your stay in the UK (worth 10 points)

This proof of financial support can take the form of bank statements or a letter from your financial sponsor, showing you can cover your tuition fees, accommodation and living costs. You may be required to show you have a budget of at least £800-1,000 (US$1,320-1,650) per month.
You may also be required to produce documents showing your academic qualifications, and to attend an interview or biometric test, which includes a digital scan of your fingerprints. Depending on your country of origin, you may also be required to have certain medical vaccinations.
Using your UK student visa
When you enter the UK, a UK Border Agency officer will put a stamp on your passport that states the duration of your stay in the UK. You cannot extend your stay beyond this period. Before you arrive, you must make sure you are fully immunized, remembering to pack your immunization record in your hand luggage in case you are asked to show the Border Agency officer at your UK port of entry.
While UK student visitor visa holders and prospective student visa holders are not allowed to work in the UK, Tier 4 student visa holders can work a certain amount of hours per week in the holiday periods.

Things For Bored Teenagers To Do Online

The Internet is a huge resource of information, entertainment, news and knowledge. It is also filled with junk, sex, violence and hate. As a teenager, a monstrous amount self-control is needed in order not to be swayed to the dark side of the force. The combination of free time in front of the computer and unlimited Web access, there are no boundaries for the wandering teen.
So what would you do if you’re a teen and you’re bored? I was once there myself. I’m not someone you’d consider physically active so most of my free time was spent at a desk, staring at a monitor. To tell you the truth, even I got bored sometimes, not knowing what else to surf for. So I’ve come up with a list of things that bored teens can resort to, in order to save them from the misery.
It is ridiculously easy to be enveloped by the rubbish that’s online. So if you’re a parent, you’d want to read through these suggestions and pass them on to your teenage child. If you’re a teenager, I’m sure you’ll find these sites utterly entertaining.

Let’s start with the most enjoyed leisurely activity. I’ve spent countless hours watching videos, either entertaining or educational. Time well spent. Here are some resources.

YouTube — Undoubtably the world leader in online videos, YouTube is the place to go for entertainment. There are also a couple of educational videos there as well. If you have no idea what to watch, check out what others are watching or their most viewed videos.
For health news:

1. WebMD — This health website is dedicated to providing medical and health information to the layperson in simple, easily-digestible nuggets. What is Pneumonia? What is vertigo? Do you have ADHD? No, the last one is not a band. If you are ever curious about the human body and everything that relates to it, WebMD can deliver it to you.
2. The New York Times Health News — The NYT definitely provides more in-depth health news. They’ve also got great articles with tips to help you keep your disease at bay. If you suffer from a disease, it’s always better to learn more about it so that you’re able to differentiate myth from the truth.
3. That’s Fit — is a health news sites that’s a little lighter on the details and medical terms. It’s generally for everyone to enjoy, with great tips on how to stay slim, lose weight, eat healthily, maintain your youth, and some valuable information for girls: the types of dieting and whether or not they work.
4. Men’s Health — Okay, this isn’t exactly a health news site but since this article is targeted at teenagers who are, let’s face it — experiencing some biological changes, they do need some guidance during the transition. My mantra is “Better to know than not”. So let your curiosity run wild and find out as much as you can about being a man. Weirdly, understanding women is key to being a better man. Don’t be let down by the fact that you have to know more about the opposite sex in order to be more masculine.

For celebrity news:
This is a topic that I’m 100% sure to be outdated. However, I’m willing to risk it and suggest a couple websites for celebrity news.
Perez Hilton — It doesn’t really help that this Hollywood queen’s website is pink. But if it’s celebrity news and gossip that you want, I don’t think there’s anywhere better.

TMZ — May be less provocative than Perez Hilton but it’s also one of the top celebrity news sites. 
This could take a while, so I’m going to skip the rest of the news sites. I do have one final suggestion, that’s Alltop.com. It basically aggregates all the top stories from most of the top sites online and gathers them into this great webpage. You can then configure and personalize your own Alltop homepage with the news that you care about. Alltop was co-founded by Guy Kawasaki, an Apple evangelist.

Learn Something

We’ve arrived at my favourite part of this article. There’s so much to learn from the Internet. Especially when you’re a teenager and have so much free time, it’s a great opportunity to learn something new. Not only that, teenage guys love to make and fix things, processes which involve their hands. Perhaps mastering a magic trick or a guitar solo to impress girls.
Ladies, on the other hand, may be interested in the finer arts like cooking, crochet, fashion, etc. For this reason, I’ve separated this section. One for guys, the other for girls.

Let’s start with the sites that teach you how to use your hands. Instructables is the go-to site for everything DIY. This website teaches you everything from making your own lightsaber to fixing a leaky faucet. They’ve also got tutorials that teach you how to conduct your very own science experiments.
Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories is another one of my favourite websites. They’ve got some weird and crazy, out-of-this-world inventions, like this Larson Scanner Kit for Halloween. Everything listed here come with their how-to tutorial so that you can follow in their evil, mad footsteps.

The last site that I’d like to feature is Makezine, specifically their Projects page where you can find lots of cool DIY urm, projects to work your hands with.

5 dead, including gunman, in shooting rampage near Santa Monica College

A man with a semi-automatic rifle killed at least four people and wounded several others Friday as he carried out a deadly rampage across several blocks of a normally idyllic beachfront city before police shot him dead in the Santa Monica College Library.
Police said earlier that seven people were killed, including the gunman.
The violence began when the gunman, dressed in all black and wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket, opened fire on a house where the bodies of the gunman's father and brother were found, authorities said.
As the house burst into flames, the man wounded a woman in a car before moving toward the campus, spraying bullets as he went. Police said he opened fire on a city bus, a police car and other vehicles, as well as bystanders and pedestrians.
He killed three people on the street before shooting at an SUV leaving a campus parking lot. That vehicle's driver was killed and two passengers were wounded as the car crashed through a block wall.
From there, the gunman entered the campus, shooting a woman as he made his way toward the college's library, where students were studying for final exams.
"It appears that those who were encountered on the street were random victims," Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said.
"We saw a woman get shot in the head," said administrative assistant Trena Johnson, who looked out the window of the dean's office, where she works, when she heard gunfire. "I haven't been able to stop shaking," she said.
Inside the library, students reported hearing gunfire and screams.
"I was totally scared to death and I can't believe it happened so fast," said Vincent Zhang, a 20-year-old economics major who said he heard a woman pleading, "No, no. Please, no."
The gunman continued to shoot at people in the library, Seabrooks said, but apparently didn't hit anybody there as dozens ran for the exits.
"The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene," she said.
Just 3 miles away, President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon. Secret Service spokesman Max Milien said the agency was aware of the shooting, which began just before noon, but it had no impact on the president's event.
The president was scheduled to take Marine One to the airport, but traveled by motorcade to avoid any impact on the ongoing local response to the shooting.
After the gunman was killed, police wearing helmets and armed with shotguns and rifles searched the campus for a second shooter. A man dressed entirely in black, the words "Life is a Gamble" on the back of his sweatshirt, was seen being led away in handcuffs.
Sgt. Richard Lewis, a Santa Monica police spokesman, said at a news conference Friday night that investigators had released a man who had been detained and questioned as a "person of interest."
The identities of the man detained and those who were killed were not immediately released.
Two officials briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press the two victims in the burned house were the gunman's father and brother.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.
Two women were admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Dr. Marshall Morgan, the chief of emergency medicine. One was listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery. The other arrived in serious condition but was upgraded to fair condition Friday night.
Three other women went to UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica with relatively minor injuries, Morgan said. One had shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire, he said. All were treated and released.
Jerry Cunningham Rathner, who lives near the house that caught fire, said she heard gunshots and came out onto her porch to see a man shooting at the residence. Soon, the building erupted in flames and was billowing smoke.
The gunman, dressed in black and wearing an ammunition belt, pointed a rifle at a woman in a car and told her to pull over, Cunningham Rathner said. He then signaled to a second car, also driven by a woman, to slow down and began firing into the vehicle.
"He fired three to four shots into the car -- boom, boom, boom, right at her," said Cunningham Rathner, who went to the woman's aid and saw she was wounded in the shoulder.
She said the gunman then abducted the woman in the first car and drove away.
From there, the chaos shifted to Santa Monica College, located among homes and strip malls more than a mile inland from the city's famous Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade and its expansive, sandy beaches.
The two-year college, spread out across 38 acres, has about 34,000 students.
Jimes Gillespie, 20, told The Associated Press he was in the library studying when he heard gunfire, and he and dozens of other students began fleeing the three-story building.
"As I was running down the stairs I saw one of the gunmen," said Gillespie, who described the shooter as a white man in his 20s, wearing cornrows in his hair and black overalls.
As he ran across campus, he said he saw a car in front of the English building that was riddled with bullet holes, had shattered windows and a baby's car seat in the back.
Student Noke Taumalolo told Fox News that he saw a female worker sorting recycling cans lying bloody on the ground with the gunman standing over her.  According to the student, the gunman was wearing black tactical gear including a vest, SWAT-like fatigues and a riot helmet.
In a staff parking lot, college employee Joe Orcutt said he saw the gunman standing calmly with his weapon, looking as though he was trying to determine which people to shoot at.
"I turn around and that's when he's just standing there, like he's modeling for some ammo magazine," Orcutt said. "He was very calm just standing there, panning around, seeing who he could shoot, one bullet at a time, like target practice.
