Govt to give free land to laptop manufacturers: Minister

FE Report

The government will give land for free to the entrepreneurs setting up laptop manufacturing factories in Bangladesh to make the portable computers available at lower prices.

"We're ready to give land free of cost to entrepreneurs for setting up laptop manufacturing plants to ensure that computers are available at lower prices," said Minister for Post & Telecommunications Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju while addressing an event organised Wednesday in the city marking the launch of business of BJ International Co (Pvt) Ltd, a Bangladesh-Japan joint venture, in the country.

He said optical fibre network would be expanded up to upazila and rural levels and cyber cafes established in villages within next two years as part of the government's efforts to develop the country as a digital one.

FBCCI (Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry) President Annisul Huq, BJ International Co Chairman Jun Tsutsumida, Vice-Chairman Ro Shogen, Managing Director Mustafijur Rahman and Establishment Management Additional Secretary Mujibul Islam Hawlader also spoke at the event. DCCI President Zafar Osman, BJ International General Manager Keiichi Miyamoto, business leaders and high government officials were present.

The minister expressed the hope that as a company dealing with technology BJ International could contribute to fulfilling the government's vision for a Digital Bangladesh.

Jun Tsutsumida said their company would introduce very low-cost wireless IP (internet protocol) telephone to build a low-cost telecommunication infrastructure in Bangladesh.

According to him, the company's other products and services would include super energy saving LED lamps, state-of-the-art digital security system, latest video communication devices, and natural preservatives.

He said use of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamp would greatly help the power scarce Bangladesh as the lamp consumes only half of the power that the presently available fluorescent lamp burns. It costs less than the fluorescent lamp does but last 7-8 times more, he added.

Jun said the state-of-the-art digital security system would provide foolproof security to establishments where it is installed. By installing the internet-based security system, one can even monitor what is happening in one's establishment from anywhere, he said.

The company chairman said video communication technology will facilitate videoconference and unbelievably easy and fast transfer of video data. It will greatly benefit the television channels and other organisations transmitting video data.

The FBCCI president in his address assured the company sponsors of all-out support from his side.
