Valentine's Day: Conversation hearts on Facebook? Sweet!

Remember conversation hearts? The candy makers are now turning to Facebook for sweet inspiration as they update the messages for next year Before there was texting, there were conversation hearts -- and Valentine's Day just wouldn't be the same without them. Right now, someone, somewhere is sitting in a first-grade classroom getting his or her very first box of conversation hearts. You remember, dontcha -- those pastel hearts inscribed with sweet sayings such as "All Mine" and "Be True"?
This Valentine's Day will no doubt be awash in conversation hearts. The New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) produced a whopping 8 billion candy hearts for this sweet holiday, shipping 25 million units in all, including those classroom-exchange boxes. (They had the label on the back, so you could fill in the "To:" and "From:" lines and bring a bunch to school for all your friends and, of course, let that special someone three desks over know he or she had an admirer.)
But some things have changed. Pick up a box today and you'll notice the candy colors seem a little more vibrant, the flavors both tart and sweet. But what will really catch your eye? The messages. Over the years, the company has tinkered with the sayings ... to mixed results.
ALSO: Valentine's Day gets a Google Doodle
Most folks were OK with ditching now-dated sayings like "Fax Me," in favor of "Text Me" or "Tweet Me," Al Gulachenski, the candy company's chief executive, told The Times. Other sayings that got the ax include "Melt My Heart," "Sugar Pie" and "Purr-fect" in favor of "Ur It" and "Hold Hands."
Some updates didn't go over so well. Racy sayings such as "Ur Hot," "Hottie," even "Bite Me" struck some as just too much, a sign that the company was trying a bit too hard to appeal to a younger generation. (Evidence: a Facebook fanpage called "Bring back the old conversation hearts!!!!!")
In days past, the company accepted recommendations via mail for updated sayings. "We used to do it the old-fashioned way. All year long, people would send in letters and we'd keep a tally. Nobody puts stamps on things anymore," Gulachenski said.
This year, for the first time, the company is turning to Facebook to allow customers to guide the conversation for next Valentine's Day. You can weigh in over at the Facebook page for CVS, which is a major retailer of the 'lil sweets.
Conversation hearts have been around a long time. Since 1902, in fact, according to NECCO's history page. Now they're part of the national conversation, used as wedding favors, on edible wreaths and as inspiration for spinoffs. Such as mini cheesecakes. "They are a favorite; they are unique because they're something that's edible but also gives a message," Gulachenski said.
We asked Gulachenski whether this month was a mad, frantic rush at the candy company. Nope. In fact, it's just the opposite -- kind of quiet. "We stopped shipping Valentine's Day sometime in December. We're on to Easter," he said.

Stem Cells Could Help Heal Broken Hearts

Even after recovery, heart attacks can leave a lasting mark on your ticker—scar tissue weakens the muscle and prevents it from functioning as well as it did before seizing up. A pioneering stem-cell procedure, however, could cut the damage in half.
According to the results of a small safety trial by the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and published in the Lancet medical journal, introducing stem cells derived from the patient's own heart have shown an "unprecedented" ability to reduce scarring as well as regenerate healthy cardiac tissue.
During a heart attack, the organ is deprived of oxygen and its tissue begins to die off. As the heart heals from the attack, any damaged muscle is replaced by scar tissue, which prevents the heart from beating properly and pumping the requisite blood flow the body needs.
The CADUCEUS (CArdiosphere-Derived aUtologous stem CElls to Reverse ventricUlar dySfunction) study involved 25 patients—eight serving as the control group, the other 17 actually receiving the treatment. Researchers first performed extensive imaging scans to identify location and severity of scarring, then biopsied a half-raisin-sized piece the patient's heart tissue. Doctors then isolated and cultured stem cells from it and injected the lab-grown stem cells—roughly 12-25 million of them—back into the heart.
After a year, scarring in patients that received the treatment decreased by an astounding fifty percent while the control group showed no decrease in scarring. "These results signal an approaching paradigm shift in the care of heart attack patients," said Shlomo Melmed, dean of the Cedars-Sinai medical faculty. The scars were once believed to be permanent but this technique shows promise as a means to regenerate the damaged muscle. It should be noted however, that the heart's ability to pump did not increase as the scar tissue disappeared.
"While the primary goal of our study was to verify safety, we also looked for evidence that the treatment might dissolve scar and regrow lost heart muscle," Eduardo Marbán, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, told PhysOrg. "This has never been accomplished before, despite a decade of cell therapy trials for patients with heart attacks. Now we have done it. The effects are substantial, and surprisingly larger in humans than they were in animal tests."
Researchers hope to soon begin an expanded clinical trial and, if the results are as promising as these, eventually use the procedure to assist the US's annual 770,000 coronary disease sufferers. [The Lancet via Physorg - BBC News]

Westminster Dog Show 2012: Pekingese, Dalmatian, German Shepherd Win Big

Westminster Dog Show 2012
NEW YORK — Wobbling the whole way, a people-pleasing Pekingese made quite a walk down the green carpet at Madison Square Garden.
A Dalmatian and a German shepherd were in more of a hurry to win at America's most prestigious dog show.
Malachy the Peke drew cheers that grew louder with every tiny step Monday night and repeated as the top toy at the Westminster Kennel Club event. Pink tongue peeking out from his black face, he beat a prize affenpinscher called Banana Joe in a most competitive group.
"He doesn't run. He has a dignified Pekingese gait," handler David Fitzpatrick said.
Malachy also has 114 best in show ribbons on his resume, and is aiming to add this title. His early work done here, he rested on a cool pack after competing.
A lively Dalmatian with black spectacle markings around his eyes took the nonsporting group. In well over 101 years, no Dalmatian has ever won Westminster's top honor.
"That's what they just told me," handler Michael Scott said.
Captain Crunch the German shepherd romped to victory in the herding group. Handled by old pro James Moses, his champion attracted ample applause, as German shepherds always do at the Garden.
"The crowd really had him up," Moses said. "He handles the carpet well."

A wire-haired dachshund called Cinders led the hounds, then wanted to sit rather than stand for her victory picture.
"She's a clown," handler Cheri Koppenhaver said.
More than 2,000 entries in 185 breeds and varieties were at the 136th Westminster. The best in show will be chosen Tuesday evening.
Still to come: a wire fox terrier who won the National show and a standard poodle who took the Eukanuba event. There's also a black cocker spaniel who was the No. 1 show dog last year – he's named Beckham, maybe a good omen since a 12-story ad featuring soccer star David Beckham posing in his underwear is painted on a building that overlooks the Garden.
Beckham the dog, by the way, beat out Malachy as the country's top-winning show dog in 2011.
Oh, and a Valentine's Day treat on tap, too: A couple from Washington state with a Tibetan mastiff plans to hold their wedding among all the pooches.
Breed winners included a chow chow co-owned by Martha Stewart and a xoloitzcuintli called Giorgio Armani, a nice start for the alphabetically challenged contestant during Fashion Week in New York City.
A Brussels griffon named Tina Fey, a barking petits bassets griffons vendeen and a sprightly Chihuahua were among the fan favorites. Also getting noticed was a Manchester toy terrier, a breed that can live to be 20 years old.
Banana Joe was among the top contenders to be standing in the coveted silver bowl at the end. Nearly 5, he was a big winner in Europe before coming to the United States.
Affens and Brussels griffons are related way back. They're similar in size and stature, but Banana Joe's handler, Ernesto Lara, drew a distinction.
"Griffons are wonderful dogs," he said. "Affenpinschers are wonderful people."
Celebrities are fairly common at Westminster – Glenn Close, Kristin Davis and Mary Tyler Moore have made appearances – and Stewart made her presence known with her dog called GK.
"Ghenghis Khan did it!" she tweeted. "Best of Breed at Westminster!!!! Big deal."
The xoloitzcuintli (shoh-loh-eets-KWEEN'-tlee), formerly known as the Mexican hairless, is among six new breeds at this year's show. They're called a "show low" (SHOH'-loh) for short and Giorgio Armani drew cheers from the fans crowded around the ring when he was picked as the best of his breed.
"They're wonderful, they're an ancient breed, it's like a best-kept secret," Lara said.
In a few years, there could be up to 240 breeds at Westminster. But there won't be a puggle, labradoodle or Maltipoo among them. A "designer dog" is more than OK for the White House – President Barack Obama and his family considered a labradoodle before getting a Portuguese water dog – but they're absent at the Garden.
To get to Westminster, a breed must meet American Kennel Club criteria – there has to be an ample population with a three-generation pedigree, a geographic spread of those dogs and a parent club to establish breed standards.
"All dogs are lovable," said the AKC's Lisa Peterson. "But a crossbreed is not a breed."

Kate Upton Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Cover: Leaked, Hot!

Kate Upton will grace the cover of the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
The announcement was made by ... the leaked cover below, first posted on TMZ.
A few of the issues arrived early to a gas station in Michigan (why that state got first dibs, who the heck knows) and the pics are already making the online rounds, as these things frequently seem to do. Check out Kate Upton's SI swimsuit issue cover below:
Sports Illustrated originally planned to announce the 2012 swimsuit edition cover girl and the cover shot at an event tonight ... and they still might. But here she is.
Kate Upton was recently rumored to be dating Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets. There's no rumor about this, though: The 19-year-old (?!) is a stunner!
Upton made a sizzling debut in last year's edition, but it's safe to say this 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover will launch her into the stratosphere.
For those out there saying that the swimsuit issue has nothing to do with sports, annual issue also features athletes in body paint (i.e. Alex Morgan nude).
So there.

Valentines For Your Man

Valentines For Your Man

Don’t let them fool you ladies… Men want to feel celebrated and adored on Valentine’s Day, too. They want to be loved and desired just as much as women do. Show your guy sweet sentiments in a way he will appreciate with one of these reader's ideas, and he will look forward to Valentine’s Day every year thereafter.
Heart Shaped Guitar Picks
My boyfriend and I had only been dating a short while before Valentine’s Day, so I didn't really want to get something super expensive. I just wanted to do something small and meaningful. He plays guitar, so I went out and bought a dozen guitar picks. I took a pair of scissors and trimmed them into hearts. Then I filed down the edges and put them all in a little clear bag tied with a ribbon. I made a card and I picked out candy hearts with the messages I liked on them. When we were exchanging our gifts on Valentine's Day, I gave him the picks and he loved them. Then I gave him one candy heart at a time and told him he had to do everything they said on them, like "hold me," "hug me," and "kiss me." He loved the whole thing.

Gifts on the Hour
For Valentine’s Day one year, I decided to give my fiancé a gift every hour he was at work. When he got to work at 8:30, a simple little card was there waiting for him wishing him a happy Valentine's Day. At 9:30, his breakfast was delivered (an omelet, hash browns, sausage, toast and orange juice). At 10:30, I sent him a huge batch of balloons. I made his favorite cream cheese cookies and had them delivered by one of my good friends wearing a clown costume at 11:30. At 12:30, a pizza and a soda came for his lunch. I sent him a huge gift bag of candy at 1:30. By this time, everyone he worked with congregated in his office on the hour waiting to see what was coming. He felt so special. I think everyone was pretty jealous. At 2:30, a stuffed frog was delivered that said, "I love you" on it. And finally at 3:30, I delivered a dozen red roses in a vase to him to say, “I love you!” I had so much fun planning the whole day, and he really loved it.

Application For Love
This year’s Valentine’s Day is special because we are finally engaged after a four-year long distance relationship. As a gift for my fiancé, I wrote a cover letter and resume to apply for the position to be his wife. In the cover letter I explained why I wanted to apply for the position, and also what I thought made me qualified for it. My resume was filled with a history of events and good times we’d spent together over the past four years. Under skills, I listed special things I do that please him (adding in a few risqué skills). He loved it and gave me the job!

Another Love Poem
I wrote my boyfriend a poem for Valentine's Day. He's a Spanish major, so I went online and translated my poem into Spanish. When I gave it to him, he cried and told me it was the best present he's ever recieved. I had to look at my copy in English to remember what I wrote that moved him so much!

A Memory box for My Man
This year, I’m planning ahead for Valentine’s Day. I am collecting mementos from the things we’ve done all year long to put in a Valentine’s Day box. I’m making it a point to save things that are meaningful to him. For example, I took a cardboard coaster from a pub we visited on the coast. He tried his new favorite beer for the first time that day, and I think he’ll be thrilled that I remembered. Another thing I’ve saved so far is my ticket from a college basketball game we went to with is dad. I’m attaching a little note to each thing saying something about the memorable event. I’m also throwing in a few of the love notes we have left for each other.

Commuter Valentine's Gift
My husband used to leave at 5 a.m. every morning to commute to work while I was going to college. One Valentine's Day, I place a few commuter comfort items in his car the night before. I had gotten a good deal on a heated massaging seat cover. I also bought him a CD of his favorite singer, some coffee shop gift certificates and chocolate-covered coffee beans (which he loves). He thought it was a nice surprise on a cold Valentine's Day morning!

Blacklight Paint Night
I surprised my boyfriend of nearly four years last Valentine's Day with a blacklight body painting session. I changed out the light bulb in our room with a black light and set up several white objects and a sheet to cover the floor (the more whites and fluorescents you use, the better). I was ready with a bunch of white body paint when he got home. We had a fun, original night discovering each other’s bodies in a whole new way with upbeat music, paints and black lighting. My boyfriend marveled at the unusual thought, and he participated enthusiastically.

Sexy Picture Show
Last year on Valentine's Day, a couple of friends and I got together and took pictures for our mates. A lady we work with had gone to school for photography, so she took the pictures. They weren't quit nude pictures, but they were close and they were very sexy. We did them all in black and white, which made them turn out even sexier. I had them framed in leopard print and snakeskin frames, which also added to the sexiness of the pictures. Needless to say, he absolutely loved them, and that was a start to an annual portfolio of sexy pictures!

Pleasure Hunt
For Valentine's Day last year, I sent my man on a "Pleasure Hunt". He woke up to a large box wrapped up with Valentine's paper, I filled it with 5 heart-shaped Mylar balloons, so when he opened the box the balloons would rise and give him his first clue, the clue read, "This is a Pleasure Hunt. Follow the hearts, and if you play your cards right you’ll end the day feeling nothing but pleasure.” The first card led him to a local spa where I treated him to an hour-long massage and an early lunch. When his lunch at the spa was served, he was given his next clue and a gift card. These led him to a local CD store where I had a romantic CD held for him and his next clue, which told him to look in his glove compartment. There he found his next clue, which told him to call me (so I knew when he was on his way) and to bring the CD to the front desk of a local hotel. When he got to the front desk, he was given a package I had held for him, and another clue. It was a key to a room in the hotel with a little tag on it that simply said "I’m Waiting". When he walked into the room, I had candles, rose petals, whipped cream, grapes, strawberries, champagne, cream cheese dip, a heart shaped tub, and me in sexy lingerie, all waiting for him. I gave him his attire for the evening - silk boxers and a matching blindfold. The night was amazing for both of us!

A Funny Valentine
My boyfriend and I are broke students attending different colleges that are four thousand miles apart from each other. We can't be together for Valentine's Day this year, but I have a few ideas as to how I can still make the day special without spending a lot of money. I’m going to send him a box full of little things that will let him know how I feel. First, I’m gonna rip up twelve little pieces of rice paper, put on some dark red lipstick, and kiss every piece. I figure if I can't send him a dozen red roses, I can send him a dozen red kisses. He and I love the song "Funny Valentine," and I love to sing it all the time. But he has never heard me sing at all, so I am going to record myself singing our song and put the CD in the box. And the final addition to my Valentine's Day box will be a little on the seductive side. I have a black satin thong with crystal strings that I bought months ago at Victoria's Secret. I have not worn them yet because I am waiting until I see him. So, I am putting that in the box as a kind of "promise" to wear it as soon as we see each other this summer. I'm sure that he'll absolutely love it!

A Weekend for Two
This year for Valentine's Day, I gave my boyfriend a romantic weekend for two in Seattle. My travel agent called me with info about a great vacation package that included airline tickets and two nights in a premiere hotel. Seattle is a great city for a romantic weekend! Most of the things that would interest visitors to the city are all downtown and within walking distance of the hotel, so there's no need to hassle with car rentals. We spent the weekend strolling through the Pike's Street Market hand-in-hand and doing some terrific big-city shopping downtown. When he asked why I would give him such an extravagant gift, I told him the truth. I simply wanted to spend a whole weekend with him with no interruptions from the phone or having friends and family just dropping in without warning. To me, it was a small price to pay for some "us" time. It was also a turning point in our relationship, and we are now shopping for our first home together. The wedding is set for next summer!

Trade Candy for “Treats”
A week before Valentine’s Day I am going to hide little cinnamon hearts around the house. I’m going to give my boyfriend a decorated jar and explain that he needs to find and collect them throughout the week to “spend” on Valentine’s Day. Then when the day finally comes, I'll give him a menu of options he can use the candies to (i.e. Massage = 10 hearts, Homemade Dinner for Two= 2 hearts, etc.). I think it'll be fun, and it will ensure that he gets the Valentine's Day he wants rather than one I think he wants!

Personalized Crossword Puzzles
A few years ago I started making my own crossword puzzles for my boyfriend. All the answers have to do with our relationship. I start with one word and then just attach other words until it looks like a game of Scrabble. I give each word a number and a simple clue, and it takes him hours to finish because we talk about memories the entire time. He now looks forward to them every year on his birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and our anniversary.

Picture It!
I'm not very creative when it comes to Valentine's Day, but last year I wanted to do something fro my boyfriend that I knew he would love. So a couple of weeks before the big day, I went to the mall and got some glamour shots done for him. Before he got home from class, I hid the pictures in his room so he'd have to find them. Then I put together a big basket of candy and stuffed animals and set it on his bed. He loved the fact he had to look for his present and when he found it he was totally surprised and loved it!

Our Very Own Romance Novel
Last year, I ordered a personalized book for my husband. It is a cheesy romance novel starring us (and our dog). There’s a bit about the “authors” on the back along with a photo of us. It was perfect because the story title was something having to do with and island adventure and I sent a picture of us kissing in a waterfall. Unfortunately, because of the weather, the book did not arrive on time. To make up for it, I wrote him a silly love song and performed it for him. I am an awful singer, so he was quite entertained. To my surprise, he had also written me a song. He played his guitar and sang it to me. It was so beautiful. When he finally received his book, he loved it so much that he read it straight through! Then, for a week or so after, he kept saying and doing things like his character in the novel. It was great!
