CATTLEYA Orchid Care

CATTLEYA (cat-LAY-a) - Cattleyas have earned the reputation as the "Queen of Orchids" and are known to the public as the ultimate in floral corsages. While some naturally occurring species are offered by growers, the most popular plants are man-made hybrids derived from combining Cattleyas with some of their close relatives to produce a wide range of colors, sizes and forms.

Cattleya is a genus of 113 species of orchids from Costa Rica to tropical South America. The genus was named in 1824 by John Lindley after Sir William Cattley who received and was the first to bloom a specimen of Cattleya labiata. Wikipedia
Scientific name: Cattleya
Rank: Genus
Higher classification: Orchidaceae
Lower classifications: Cattleya schofieldiana, Cattleya nobilior, More

Temperature: The ideal day temperature is 75-85 degrees F., while the ideal night temperature is 60-65 degrees F. Occasional temperature extremes are tolerated if exposure is not prolonged.

Light:
Cattleyas and their relatives require a good amount of light. They enjoy full sun in the morning, but will require shading from about 11am-3pm; less shading will be necessary in the late afternoon. Their leaves should be a light green color, and a darker green color indicates too little sun.

Water:
Basically, cattleyas grow best when their potting medium becomes dry in between waterings. These plants are epiphytes in nature, (i.e. growing on top of trees) and are used to drying out between the rains of their natural habitat.

Repot:
Cattleyas should not be repotted unless the plant have outgrown the pot (every 2 or 3 years) or when the potting medium begins to deteriorate. Or when the mixture become sour, does not drain rapidly and is invaded by snow mold or shows green mold on the surface. A coarse medium such as medium-grade Fir-bark, or coarse-grade Fir-bark will work well.

Feeding:
High-nitrogen fertilizers (25-9-9) can be used year-round at one teaspoon per gallon of water. Feed once a month.

Cutting Dead Flower Spike: When the last flower drops, cut your flower spike all the way down the stem. Apply a pinch of cinnamon powder or melted candle to seal the wound. Continue caring for it and wait for a possible rebloom.

dancing with the stars - About the Show

Season 12 is a wrap and what a season it was! Before the dazzling finale, we were treated to many weeks of shoes flying, stars crying, pros stumbling and an ever-changing leaderboard! The hits kept coming (as did the misses) as the stars rehearsed hard and danced harder in pursuit of the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy.
Right out of the gate there were strong performances like Kirstie Alley's Cha Cha and Ralph Macchio's Foxtrot in Week One. Some routines were deemed not-so-hot, as 'Psycho' Mike Catherwood and Lacey Schwimmer found out as the first couple sent home. Hey, someone had to go, right?
Wendy Williams and Tony Dovolani's low scores put them on the short list for elimination and, sure enough, they were the next sent packing. Boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard was knocked out (with Anna Trebunsakaya) in Week Four. Although Petra Nemcova may be a survivor, she and Dmitry Chaplin didn't survive Week Five.
In Week Six, wrestling superstar Chris Jericho brought some surprisingly elegant moves to the ballroom, but his Tango wasn't tough enough to keep him from being sent home fifth this season. Kendra Wilkinson followed him out the door the next week.
This left us with our Final Five: Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward, Kirstie Alley, Ralph Macchio and Romeo. Even though Romeo's dancing saw great improvement, he received his walking papers in Week Eight. And in Week Nine, we said goodbye to Karate Kid Ralph Macchio. And then there were three.
Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward and Kirstie Alley worked hard to make it to the finals. Chelsea suffered stinging commentary from the judges at times, but always remained upbeat and focused. Hines seemed to do well each and every week. Even if he didn't, you'd never have known it because of that infectious smile. And even though Kirstie suffered every mishap imaginable, she was stronger than ever heading into the finale. When all the judging and voting was done, it was Hines Ward and Kym Johnson who danced away with the Mirror Ball Trophy as the champs of Season 12. Congrats to them both!

Myth & Magic

Myth & Magic figurines are produced by The Tudor Mint. The initial collection of 12 figures first appeared in 1989 and were an instant success with shops and collectors. The range quickly grew and by the end of the first year almost forty figures had been released.

Pictured right: The Protector - The first Annual Presentation Piece released in 1990 and retired in 1991. There were 8,849 produced and the model depicts Snowscale with her son.

Prior to Myth & Magic, The Tudor Mint was producing a series of silver and gilt-plated animals entitled Crystalflame. Interest in this collection was waning and the idea of a similar range based on mythology was put forward.

Today the collection boasts dragons, wizards and characters not only from the world of Myth & Magic (Methtintdour), but also from Arthurian Legend and Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings".

A Myth & Magic Collectors Club began in 1990 and ran for a number of years. Members received a membership gifts and the opportunity to purchase members only items. Early models are especially collectable. The club also produced a bi-yearly Myth & Magic journal, The Methtintdour Times.

There is a lot of interest in the early figures, as well as the club and extravaganza models, however the high prices achieved for models in the 1990s are gone. There are a number of mould variations in the range with the same piece often being produced in slightly different formats. The earlier mould variations are generally the more sought after.
