8 cops hurt in clashes

At least eight policemen, including an assistant superintendent of police, were injured in clashes with Jamaat-Shibir activists during the second day of dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal enforced by Jamaat yesterday.
Over 50 people were injured in clashes between the law enforcers and the activists at various places including Narayanganj, Khulna, Sirajganj, Satkhira and Dhaka districts.
Jamaat enforced the hartal demanding cancellation of the International Crimes Tribunal and release of its top leaders detained on war crimes charges.
Over 45 vehicles were vandalised and ten others torched by Jamaat-Shibir men during the hartal hours across the country.
At Siddhirganj in Narayanganj yesterday, Jamaat-Shibir cadres equipped with iron rods and sharp weapons swooped on police, forcing them to take shelter in a road-side restaurant and a photo studio.
The activists vandalised both the establishments when police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters at them.
Three policemen, including officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, suffered injuries during the clash.
On information, additional policemen rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after firing over 35 rubber bullets, witnesses said.
At least 15 people were injured, three of them by rubber bullets, they added.
At Paribagh in Dhaka, Badrul Hasan, 30, an assistant sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, was injured during a chase and counter-chase between the law enforcers and the stick-wielding pro-hartal activists around 9:30am.
The injured ASI received first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Jamaat-Shibir men also blasted six cocktails in the area to create panic among pedestrians. Police detained two activists from the spot.
In Sylhet, the pro-hartal activists vandalised at least 10 vehicles at Subidbazar, Pathantola, Bagbari, Mirermaidan and Shibganj areas in the morning, witnesses said.
In Rajshahi, a clash happened between police and Jamaat-Shibir men when the activists blocked Chapainawabganj-Natore bypass at Narikelbaria and vandalised a truck and a human hauler there around 8:00am.
At Daspukur in the city, police fired several teargas canisters and gunshots when the activists threw brick chips on them in the morning.
Police detained nine people from the spot, said SM Moniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
At least 15 people including an assistant superintendent of police and a constable were injured during a clash between Jamaat-Shibir men and police at Batiaghata upazila in Khulna around 8:00am.
Over 200 Shibir men clashed with the law enforcers and vandalised a police van at Khejurtala on Khulna-Mongla bypass road, leaving assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Mamunur Rashid injured.
Police charged truncheons and fired 32 rubber bullets to disperse the Shibir men, the ASP added.
In Sirajganj, at least 10 people, including two cops were injured as Jamaat-Shibir men clashed with them at Hatikumrul in Raiganj upazila in the morning, said Humayun Kabir, superintendent of police.
The injured policemen are Tazul Huda, officer-in-charge (OC) of Solonga Police Station, and Ali Farid Ahmed, OC of Sirajganj Highway Police.
