Chhatra Shibir torched two vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in
Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, police arrested seven Jamaat-Shibir men in Sitakunda and Chandgaon upazilas Wednesday night and early Thursday in connection with the arson and vandalism during February 5 hartal.
Samiul Alam, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station, said a group of 15 to 20 Jamaat-Shibir men stopped a pickup van and a covered van at Basbari in the upazila around 5:45am and set fire to those.
The vans were heading for Chittagong, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting the OC.
On information, fire fighters from Sitakunda fire station rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
No casualty was reported.
Meanwhile, Mostafa Noor, Jamaat assistant secretary general of Sitakunda unit and also the vice chairman of the upazila, and Shibir activist Shahidul Islam were arrested from their respective residences around 1:00am, said Syed Iqbal Ali, assistant superintendent of police (Sitakunda Circle).
They were arrested on charge of arson and creating obstacle in transport movement in Sitakunda during Jamaat-enforced countrywide hartal on February 5.
Police arrested five Shibir men at Bahaddarhat in Chandgaon upazila on charge of assaulting police during February 5 hartal, police said.
Rajesh Barua, sub-inspector of Chandgaon Police Station, said they arrested the Shibir men around 9:00pm in connection with the case filed with Panchlaish Police Station on February 5.
