The New Slavery: World News

The goal of the plutocrats now running U.S. society, including our governments, is now abundantly clear: they endeavor to institute a new age of slavery. This was made evident in an editorial in today’s N.Y. Times with the compelling title of “A Rising Call to Promote STEM Education and Cut Liberal Arts Funding” By Patricia Cohen (Feb. 21, 2016).
Wait, that doesn’t sound so radical, does it? It does if you know a few facts. For one there is no reason to favor STEM education over any other. There is no shortage of qualified applicants for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) jobs.

The unemployment statistics show this in the numbers of recent graduates who cannot get jobs in their fields as does the basic fact of economics that if there is a shortage of workers of a particular type, their wages increase (to attract the few that are available). Wages in this field are changing no faster than the others. The “shortage” of STEM job candidates and STEM college graduates was cooked up by plutocrats to support their demands for more visas to allow STEM foreign workers into the U.S. Recently Disney was caught laying off 20 of its I.T. employees to be replaced by foreigners on work visas, for example. There was no “shortage” other than the one created by the firing of the current workers who, by the way, were earning performance bonuses so it is hard to argue they were substandard.

The plutocrats really like these workers on visas, as they work for less, which drives down wages for all of the other workers in their category and they don’t complain, because if they lose their job they lose their visa and “bye-bye U.S.”

“Welcome to the new slavery. The chains are invisible but real. Sit down and shut the fuck up.”

What is telling are the arguments being used, basically “STEM good, humanities bad.” They argue that public money shouldn’t be spent on students who would be working at the lower paying jobs that a humanities education affords. (I hear echoes of “effing hippies” from the 60’s.) This argument is, of course, bogus. Currently humanities college graduates in the U.S. have starting salaries that are roughly equal to the median salary of all Americans. This means those humanities grads, all things being roughly the same as they have been in the past, will be earning above average wages for the rest of their lives, which means they will pay above average taxes and the taxes in excess of the average amount repay the public for the education expenditure several times over. So, guarding the public coffers is a bogus argument.

Also, the plutocrats are basically saying that we should use data regarding what people are making now to focus our attention regarding what is important in an education. This makes no sense in an economy in which people’s jobs are changing so fast that the average worker can expect to have seven different jobs in their working life, many of which have not yet been invented. (If you used the job description “social media consultant” ten years ago, what would people have thought?)
It is clear the kind of future the plutocrats plan.

They expect citizens to “sit down and shut the fuck up” while they run the country however they wish. If citizens are to have choices of political candidates it is only ever between candidates that offer no threat to the status quo. If a candidate does offer a threat, say recommending free education and higher taxes on the rich (Go, Bernie!), he is to be quashed as strongly as possible by a candidate propped up by the plutocrats.

To enforce this vision of the future, the plutocrats are using chains of debt. For example, many political upheavals in this country have been supported by college students. A few changes in the tax code and voilĂ  now total college student debt exceeds total credit card debt (think about that). A student looking at a mountain of debt that needs to be paid off cannot afford to blemish his ability to get a good paying job with an arrest record, etc. so, college students have been defanged.

Additionally, teachers and teachers unions have opposed plutocrats (even to the point of voting for Democrats), so now they are demonized and beleaguered on all sides and are no longer a political force.

Welcome to the new slavery. The chains are invisible but real. Sit down and shut the fuck up.

Apple Stores offering free 'Hour of Code' development classes this Wednesday

Apple this week will participate in a worldwide campaign from Code.org, offering children and teenagers a one-hour introduction to computer science class at its retail locations throughout the U.S.
Code

Apple's "Hour of Code Youth Workshops" are designed to "demystify code," the company said, showing that anyone can learn the basics of computer programming. Interested parties can find their nearest Apple Store on the company's website, where they can also sign up in advance.

The Hour of Code is an effort to have 10 million people participate during Computer Science Education Week, which runs from Dec. 9 through 15.

Those who want to teach their own Hour of Code can find tips and instructions on the official Code.org site. There, a number of tutorials are provided in as many as 20 languages to allow students to participate.

According to Code.org, nearly 2 million people have learned an Hour of Code so far, with nearly 55 million lines of code having been written by students.

Support for the Hour of Code goes well beyond Apple, with President Barack Obama and Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor endorsing the event. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has also pitched in to promote the event, as well as entertainers ranging from Ashton Kutcher to Shakira.

Code.org said on Monday that this year's Computer Science Education Week will include 5 million students in 35,000 schools from 167 countries participating in their first Hour of Code.

Hour of Code campaign urges students to learn to code (podcast)

It's pretty unusual to see an issue supported by President Obama and House Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor -- as well as Apple and Microsoft -- but they're all backing Hour of Code, which aims to get 5 million students in 33,000 classrooms around the world to learn at least one hour of computer science this week.
Sponsored by Code.org, the effort features entertainers Shakira, Ashton Kutcher, and Angela Bassett and athletes Chris Bosh, Warren Sapp, and Dwight Howard in videos supporting this cause. Tech luminaries including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Susan Wojcicki, and the late Steve Jobs also weigh in with messages on the importance of learning to code. Click here to view them.
During the course of the week there will be Hour of Code Learning events at every major Apple store in the U.S. along with all 51 Microsoft retail stores. This is also Computer Science Education Week. In a recorded interview (scroll down to listen), Code.org co-founder Ali Partovi said that "only 5 percent of U.S. schools teach computer science today, and that number is down from where it was 10 years ago." He said that computer science education peaked around 2003/2004 for a variety of reasons including budget along with state education standards. "In the vast majority of U.S. states computer science does not count toward graduation. It counts as an elective." As money gets tight, schools are cutting computer science along with art and music.
Pointing to the number of coding jobs not just in tech firms but hospitals, government, and all types of businesses, Partovi said that computer science "is the most empowering thing a kid could be learning, especially a kid from a disadvantage background." I didn't fact-check this, but he said that "a college graduate's first job in computer science makes more money than a doctor who's 10 years older." One thing I can't argue with is his statement that for disadvantaged youth, "the dream of becoming a computer programmer" is much more realistic than the odds of becoming an NBA player or a hip-hop star.

Same with the other categories, one step is usually enough to find a hotel rate that makes sense for your pocket. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesperson

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
Recognizing and Supporting Burma’s Democratic Reforms
April 4, 2012

Treaty Room
Washington, D.C.

SECRETARY CLINTON:  From the beginning of this Administration, we have pursued a policy of engagement to support human rights and reform in Burma.  We knew that the challenges were great, but we also believed that a new approach was needed to support the aspirations of the people.  And this week, the government and the people made further progress in advancing those aspirations.
The results of the April 1st parliamentary by-elections represents a dramatic demonstration of popular will that brings a new generation of reformers into government.  This is an important step in the country’s transformation, which in recent months has seen the unprecedented release of political prisoners, new legislation broadening the rights of political and civic association, and fledgling process in internal dialogue between the government and ethnic minority groups.
These elections and the progress that we have seen are precisely the kind of step that the President and I envisioned when we embarked on this historic opening.  President Thein Sein and many of his colleagues inside the government helped launch their country on a historic new path.  And while there is much to be done and significant tests lie ahead, we applaud the president and his colleagues for their leadership and courage, and we congratulate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for her election to the parliament as well as the election of many of her colleagues.
The United States is committed to taking steps alongside the Burmese Government and people as they move down the road of reform and development.  In light of the by-election and the other progress of recent months, we are consulting actively with the Congress as well as our allies and friends in Europe and Asia on our response to these recent developments.  We are prepared to take steps toward:  first, seeking agrement for a fully accredited ambassador in Rangoon in the coming days, followed by a formal announcement of our nominee; second, establishing an in-country USAID mission and supporting a normal country program for the United Nations Development Program; third, enabling private organizations in the United States to pursue a broad range of nonprofit activities from democracy building to health and education; fourth, facilitating travel to the United States for select government officials and parliamentarians; and fifth, beginning the process of a targeted easing of our ban on the export of U.S. financial services and investment as part of a broader effort to help accelerate economic modernization and political reform.  Sanctions and prohibitions will stay in place on individuals and institutions that remain on the wrong side of these historic reform efforts.
Now, this reform process has a long way to go.  The future is neither clear nor certain.  But we will continue to monitor developments closely and meet, as I said when I was there, action with action.  We will continue to seek improvements in human rights, including the unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners and the lifting of conditions on all those who have been released.  We will continue our support for the development of a vibrant civil society, which we think will greatly add to the reform of the economy and society.  We will continue to urge progress in national reconciliation, specifically with ethnic minority groups.  And we will continue to press for the verifiable termination of the military relationship with North Korea.
Yet even as we urge these further steps, we fully recognize and embrace the progress that has taken place, and we will continue our policy of engagement that has encouraged these efforts.  The leadership has shown real understanding and commitment to the future of their country.  That development, we hope, will be sustainable and produce even more results.
As we have done over the last several months, the United States will stand with the reformers and the democrats, both inside the government and in the larger civil society, as they work together for that more hopeful future that is the right of every single person.
Thank you all very much.

Bobby Brown DUI: Arrested On Suspicion Of Drunk Driving In Los Angeles (UPDATED REPORT)

UPDATE (7:04 PM): Brown has been released on bail after blowing at least .08 on his sobriety test, according to TMZ.
UPDATE: TMZ reports that Brown's "people are en route to the jail to bail him out."
PREVIOUSLY: Bobby Brown was arrested in Los Angeles Monday afternoon on suspicion of drunk driving, TMZ reports.
Brown was initially pulled over by the California Highway Patrol at 12:20 PST for talking on his cell phone, before the situation escalated to a potential DUI.
According to Gossip Cop, Brown was given a sobriety test, blowing a 0.12. The 43-year-old singer was then taken directly to Van Nuys jail. If he's convicted, this will be the second DUI for Brown -- his first was in Georgia in 1996.
Brown's arrest comes on the heels of a traumatic month for the Brown-Houston family. Following Whitney Houston's Feb. 11 death, the legendary singer's ex-husband received a media lashing for not immediately taking a flight to be by daughter Bobbi Kristina's side. Brown once again faced negative headlines after leaving the funeral of his ex-wife and the mother of his daughter early, due to a seating disagreement.

Kurt Busch’s future is bleak after ousting at Penske

 undefined
Yes, Kurt Busch essentially got fired from Penske Racing, even if both sides are calling their divorce a “mutual agreement.” No one is buying that, not when competitive rides in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series are so hard to come by and Busch’s options for next year and beyond are, well, slim at best.
Busch ousted himself at Penske with a temper he couldn’t control and an attitude that’s been wearing thin on teammates, owners, competitors and, most importantly in the racing business, sponsors since he burst onto the Cup scene back in 2001.
In front of the scene, he’s verbally abused his crew chief and team members over his in-car radio and has even singled out team owner Roger Penske – “10-4, dude,” Busch said sarcastically to Penske after the owner tried to calm him down during a race in 2009. His most recent outburst came in the form of a fan-generated YouTube clip on which Busch berates a reporter while waiting for an interview.
That action led to a $50,000 fine from NASCAR and clearly put Roger Penske in an uncomfortable position.
“These actions do not represent Penske Racing and are inconsistent with the company’s standards for behavior, respect for others and professionalism,” his company said in a statement following the incident. “This matter is being reviewed internally.”
The review likely included Busch’s now-former sponsor Shell Oil Company, which prior to the season signed a multi-year deal that spread across Penske’s multiple business ventures, including his IndyCar operation. If they wanted Busch out, they would have the power to make it happen.
Following Monday’s announcement that Busch was out at Penske, Shell released a statement that read, in part, “[we] utilize our motorsports program to gain technical knowledge for our products and brands and to promote them to consumers in a positive way” and “moving forward we will continue to work with the team at Penske Racing and to evaluate the best options for our motorsports program.”
The damning part of this for Busch is that rarely are drivers of his caliber let go by an organization. And now it’s happened to him – twice. Jack Roush fired him back in 2005 after Busch was cited for reckless driving off the track in Phoenix. Now it’s happened again. Somewhere, Busch is grinding on himself, knowing he may have just blown his last best opportunity to be a championship driver. And the worst part of it: He knows he did it to himself.
I recognize the passion and emotion that have helped me succeed on the track need to be better channeled off the track,” he said via a statement released Monday morning. “The past few months I began working with a sports psychologist to help me better deal with my emotions, especially following moments of frustration during competition.”

The question now is will an owner and a sponsor give him a third chance?Busch’s now infamous run-in with Jimmy Spencer back in 2003 could be chalked up to immaturity. He was 25 and still fairly green on the professional circuit. When Roush told him to take a hike back in 2005, Busch was coming off a championship season, which could have left him with a sense of entitlement and a feeling that he was untouchable.

He’s run out of excuses now.
At 33, he’s mature enough to make smart decisions, has plenty of experience to know the difference between right and wrong and has been burned enough times to know his considerable talent on the track (24 wins, fifth-most among active drivers) isn’t enough to keep him employed.
“Kurt is a hell of a driver and a past champion but he thinks he’s above everyone and everything. You can’t treat people that way – I don’t care who you are” said Spencer, now an analyst on SPEED. “My gut feeling … is that he can’t truly come back from this. He won races this year, made the Chase and is a former champion, and yet he still was let go. That does not bode well for his future.”
In his statement, Busch said he never wants to “take for granted that it’s a privilege to earn a living as a NASCAR driver” and that he’s “committed to making the changes necessary for me to enjoy racing again, to compete for championships and to better represent NASCAR, my sponsors, my team and my fans.”
The challenge for him now is to walk the talk, which might not even be good enough. Because while he may be one of the 10 most talented stock car drivers alive, as of now he has no affiliation with NASCAR, no sponsor to represent, no team to drive for and seemingly no opportunity better than the one he just lost.

BCS Rankings: Alabama Or Oklahoma State For No. 2 Spot?

Oklahoma State Bcs Alabama

Too soon to call, but things are looking up for Alabama.
Alabama and Oklahoma State are awaiting word on which team will play LSU in the BCS national title game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans.
The returns have been trickling in Sunday, and so far the Crimson Tide seems to be in the lead.
In the USA Today coaches' poll, Alabama was No. 2, but the commanding lead it had last week is now down to 22 points. The coaches' poll and the Harris poll count for two-thirds of a team's BCS score.
The Harris poll was due out later Sunday.
A compilation of six computer ratings will determine the final third of a BCS score. The Sagarin ratings released early Sunday had Alabama No. 2 and Oklahoma State No. 3.
Unbeaten LSU is the top-ranked team in all the polls out so far, including the AP Top 25, which is independent from the BCS rankings.
A rematch between LSU and Alabama in the national title game seemed almost a foregone conclusion heading into conference championship weekend.
But with Alabama idle, Oklahoma State made one last, strong push by beating Oklahoma 44-10 to win the Big 12 title.
Now, instead of Sunday being a coronation there's another BCS controversy: Should Alabama get another shot at the only team that beat the Tide, even if that means an all-SEC title game and a matchup that will surely play far better in the South than anywhere else? Or should the Cowboys, who beat five teams ranked in the last BCS standings and whose only loss was a double-overtime upset on the road to Iowa State, get the nod?
"If you want the best two teams in college football to play then there has to be a format to decide that," Alabama coach Nick Saban said Saturday on ESPN as he made sure the Tide wasn't forgotten while the other top teams played. "If you want a regional game that matches up people from different parts of the country you can't say `Let's have the best two teams play.' It's not really up to me. I can't really be objective here. We do have a dog in this hunt. That's my opinion."
Working in Alabama's favor is the Crimson Tide's dominance throughout the season – all of its victories have been by at least 16 points – and the fact that no other team has challenged LSU this season.
The Tide and Tigers played what was billed as the Game of the Century on Nov. 5 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Tigers won it 9-6 in overtime, a hard-hitting defensive slog that didn't exactly have fans around the country clamoring for more.
Immediately the talk of rematch started, pro and con. But Oklahoma State was in position to keep it from happening. The Cowboys were undefeated and second in the BCS standings heading into a Friday night game at Ames, Iowa, a day after Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and an assistant coach were killed in a plane crash.
The Cowboys lost 37-31 in double OT to the so-so Cyclones (6-6), missing a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation by inches.
With no other undefeated teams left from the major conferences, Alabama returned to No. 2 and the debate has grown more furious ever since.
On one side, Alabama supporters say it's simple: The system is supposed to match the best two teams, regardless of conference, and the Tide have been one of the two most dominant teams in the country.
On the other side, the Oklahoma State supporters say the Cowboys have accomplished more to get to 11-1 than the Tide, playing a tougher schedule and winning their conference.
Alabama fans counter by saying the SEC is the best conference in the land. What more proof is needed than five straight BCS championships?
"I would certainly understand if college football decides it should be two SEC teams playing for the national championship," LSU coach Les Miles said after the Tigers pounded Georgia 42-10 in the SEC championship game. "It's a very special conference with very special teams."
Oklahoma State fans say their team's super-charged offense, second in the nation in scoring and third in yards, would put up some touchdowns against LSU's tenacious defense.
Alabama fans think those flashy Big 12 offenses are no match for an SEC defense, and no team, not even LSU, has allowed fewer yards and points than the Tide.
Oklahoma State's reply: If the regular season is a playoff, the way BCS officials suggest, didn't LSU eliminate Alabama?
"They had their shot," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said after the Oklahoma game. "Give us ours."
Alabama fans say this isn't pee-wee soccer where everybody gets a chance to play.
Whichever team wins out, expect another of blast of criticism directed at the BCS. As the power-brokers in college football start to plot how top-tier bowls will be set up in the future, the 2011 season is once more exposing the flaws in the system now.
Two teams with perfectly good arguments are fighting over one spot, with subjective voters and mysterious computer ratings – the formulas of which are not even publicly known – doing the choosing.
If Alabama is the pick, the Tide will be playing for its second BCS title in three seasons. Alabama claims 13 national championships overall and is one of the most decorated programs in the land. It's won seven AP titles since the wire service started its poll in 1936.
For Oklahoma State, just getting into any of the marquee BCS bowls will be a first. The Cowboys have never won a national title, and some Oklahoma State fans have wondered if their team is also losing the battle of the brands.
There has never been a rematch in the previous 13-year history of the BCS, nor has there ever been a championship game with both teams from the same conference.
The closest thing to a potential Alabama-LSU II college football has had in recent years was in 1996, when Florida State beat Florida in its final regular season game then drew the Gators again in the Sugar Bowl.
Steve Spurrier's Gators beat Bobby Bowden's Seminoles 52-20 to win the national championship.
Bowden wasn't happy to face Florida again.
"If it's somebody you beat, you don't want to play them," Bowden said Sunday in a phone interview.
"The team that won, it's just hard to get your boys as inspired as the other team can get inspired."
Yet as far as a rematch this year, Bowden said both teams can make a good case, and he's not opposed to giving Alabama a second chance.
"If that's the way it shapes up that's OK," he said. "You got to get the best two teams in the country playing for the national championship."
Remember, of course, that Bowden was born in Birmingham, Ala.

Cotto-Margarito undercard: Rios, Jones and Rodriguez earn victories

Brandon-rios_600
Oxnard’s Brandon Rios, a day removed from being sick and gaunt while failing to make the 135-pound lightweight limit, overcame a slow start to overwhelm Englishman John Murray by 11th-round technical knockout in the semi-main event on the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito undercard.
Rios (29-0-1, 21 knockouts) battered Murray (31-2) with hard uppercuts in the 11th, backing the Brit to the ropes and surging forward to deliver more punishment when referee Earl Brown stepped in to stop the fight at the 2:06 mark.
“Murray’s a great warrior and deserves a lot of respect,” Rios said after disrespecting his opponent at a Thursday news conference. “I got him with a right uppercut and left hook.”
The 25-year-old Rios now can carry on with his plan to move up to the talent-loaded 140-pound division, where he is seeking a date with either Marcos Maidana or Juan Manuel Marquez.
The pay-per-view portion of the undercard opened with a convincing unanimous-decision victory by Philadelphia’s unbeaten Mike Jones, who so dominated Argentina’s Sebastian Lujan during the early rounds that Lujan walked to Jones’ corner after the fifth round.
Almost comically, Jones (26-0) directed Lujan (38-6-2) to the correct corner, leaving a sheepish Lujan to shrug.
Jones won the fight by scores of 119-109 (judge Waleska Roldan), 119-109 (Ron McNair) and 118-110 (Don Ackerman). Jones nearly knocked out Lujan in the final minute of the 11th round, but settled for the victory in the International Boxing Federation welterweight title eliminator.
“There’s no easy fights,” Jones said. “It was tough because he threw a lot of awkward shots. I was always on my guard. But I thought I won every round.”
Also, junior-middleweight Delvin Rodriguez punctuated his July fight-of-the-year candidate draw with New Jersey’s Pawel Wolak by dominating the rematch in a unanimous decision by scores of 98-91, 98-92 and 100-90.
Rodriguez (26-5-3) used his reach and counter-punching advantages to beat up the ever-charging Wolak (29-2-1), swatting Wolak’s head with rights and uppercuts.
The tough Wolak, a union asphalt roofer in New York, often nodded to Rodriguez that the heavy blows weren’t hurting, but his right eye was badly swollen by the sixth round and his desire was no match for Rodriguez’s skill.
Rodriguez connected on 90 more punches.
Judge John McKaie scored the 10th round 10-8 for Rodriguez as he unleashed combinations and barrages that set up a right uppercut that wobbled Wolak.
“I don’t know what kept him up,” Rodriguez said.
Another hard right and uppercut capped the impressive finish.
“I knew I needed to close the show this time,” Rodriguez said after enduring Wolak’s body punches. “I wasn’t taking any chances.”

For Miguel Cotto, Win VS Margarito Ushers in New Chapter

Miguel Cotto can now victoriously close a bizarre chapter in his boxing career three years after being at the end of a pounding from Antonio Margarito and accusing the Mexican fighter of knowingly having his hands illegally wrapped by his trainer.
Cotto and his mother, who asked Margarito in the ring if her son still hit like a girl - can now move on. Both mother and son changed their tears of blood from that first encounter into tears of joy Saturday night.
The Puerto Rican fighter walked into a Madison Square Garden as a sea of 21,239 fans, of mostly boricuas who pushed their idol to retain his Junior middleweight championship throughout the night.
Finally, their cheers were answered with by Cotto with a TKO in the tenth round after doctors stopped the fight because of Margarito's swollen shut right eye.
Cotto moved past this saga in his career last night by doing what many expected him to do which was to go after Margarito's weakness, his right eye, which underwent surgery after the beating Manny Pacquiao gave him in November 2009.
Cotto moved on past a fighter he had called a "criminal" in the days leading to the fight and handed him his sentence.
With much satisfaction he walked towards Margarito after the fight was called, savoring the moment. He stared at his opponent, gladly aware that he had finally gotten revenge and wouldn't have to deal with the memories from that night during their first fight in 2008.
"I don't have have anything to talk to him, you know. He has his own life. I have my own here. He can keep (on) with his life. I'm going to keep (on) with mine," Cotto said.
"I just simply stood there to look at him. I simply stood to taste the victory. I don't know, if with the eye he had open, he looked at me."
Cotto has moved on and is now entering another stage of his career.
And if Saturday nights fight was any indication of what the future has in store - watch out.
Cotto looked much better in the ring in his attack of Margarito, defending himself by moving and circling around Margarito to avoid his punches - a tactic stressed by his new trainer, Pedro Diaz.
The fight also symbolized the strengthening of a new bond between Cotto and Diaz.
Cotto's hiring of Diaz was frowned upon by many especially because he ended his relationship with Emmanuel Steward in October just two months before his big fight.
“It was the same Cotto. What happen was that he utilized his mind,” Diaz said. “I think in two months it's difficult to change a boxer. What we solely did was take the good things that the other trainers did with him in the past and applied a little bit of intelligence only."

Cotto said the preparation and chemistry in his camp was the key in finally being able to beat Margarito. He singled out Diaz for planning a "perfect strategy for the fight".
"We followed it tonight. We simply utilized our quickness, our best moves against Margarito and avoided the ropes, which was that killed us in the previous fight," Cotto said.
Other fighters surely await in the horizon, notably Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but Cotto wants nothing but rest.  Puerto Rico's pride must now regain his boxing focus in about three weeks when he would then be able to know what exactly lies before him in the ring.
"We still need to work a lot to get to where we want to go. We will get that in the months coming forward and in the upcoming workouts and training sessions," he said.

It's never an easy night when you have to cover one show that ends around 1 a.m. ET and then get through a Tivo'ed three hour show. As such, I'm in pretty rough shape this morning.
That being said, I'm also really happy with the action from both the Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito and Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale. Having had a night, or at least part of a night, to sleep on it, let's go through the events of last night for some thoughts.
  • Michael Bisping vs. Jason Miller went pretty much exactly as I expected. Bisping hasn't exactly beaten the best fighters in the world, but being active against at least good fighters is a lot better than the two years Miller has gone since fighting Jake Shields.
  • In the end Bisping is simply a better fighter. He takes a bit to get going sometimes, as was the case last night, but even when Miller was working toward the mount he wasn't ever in danger. Once Mayhem tried to secure it, that's when Bisping felt the trouble and stood up. And in terms of cardio, striking and just general all around fighting ability, Bisping is the better fighter.
  • Diego Brandao has huge flaws in his game, he wings his strikes so wide that he is easy to counter or take him down, but he is a blast to watch. Dennis Bermudez fought well and took advantage of the ease with which Brandao can be hit, but he left an arm in for just a second and that was all it took. Brandao has a killer instinct that some fighters just never pick up, and that will serve him well in his career.
  •
  • More thoughts after the jump:
    Star-divide
  • While I believe that size absolutely matters in the fight game, speed can make up for it when the skill levels are close. That's what allows John Dodson to look so good and hurt so many bigger men as he did against T.J. Dillashaw. He's able to get in, hit hard and quickly and then get out of danger if needed. While it'll be interesting to see if Dodson can continue to be as effective against the UFC's 135 pounders. The speed will serve him well, but as the skill level of his competition increases the size may come into play.

  • Tony Ferguson and Yves Edwards put on a fun fight that saw both men have their moments. I wasn't really scoring the fight as I watched but it seemed clear to me that Edwards had won at least one round. I'm not sure where 30-27 Ferguson comes from, but that's just me. I still have my doubts about Tony's future as he seems like a talented guy who might not always fight up to how talented he truly is.

  • Like I said in the predictions, the UFC seemed to want Johnny Bedford to stick around and matched him to get that done.

  • On the HBO pay-per-view boxing card, the fights were interesting but the crowd and announcers actually took away from a fun undercard. During really good fights between Brandon Rios and John Murray as well as Pawel Wolak vs. Delvin Rodriguez, the commentary and production crew spent most of their time talking about the main event and desperately trying to fit in as many shots of Cotto and Margarito backstage as possible. And the crowd was just dead as they were mostly Cotto supporters waiting for the main event.

  • Mike Jones looked way better than I thought he would against Sebastian Lujan. Lujan is a pressure fighter that breaks guys down over the fight and Jones has had cardio issues in the past. Rather than getting pulled into an ugly fight, he used his size and technique to just outclass Lujan.

  • Pawel Wolak vs. Delvin Rodriguez 2 was not as good as the first fight but was still very good. Wolak simply can't be in a bad fight and Rodriguez has a good style compliment. Delvin did a really good job of using the keys he figured out in the first fight in the rematch. Understanding when to catch him on the way in, to use uppercuts and hooks and just wear out Wolak.

  • Brandon Rios looked awful for much of the fight against John Murray. He was sluggish and by the third or fourth round was taking deep sighing breaths. But, despite all his character flaws, he has tremendous heart and guts. Despite clearly being affected by the bad weight situation he just kept punching and punching and took advantage of Murray's tremendously bad defense. It was a decent showing for both men but may have been the best kind of thing Rios could do. Proving the level to which he is willing to go to win. Now, let's just hope that his camp tells him that he is not a lightweight anymore.

  • Miguel Cotto got his revenge and it's hard to say a lot about. The feeling was always that Margarito was a pretty shot fighter. He has looked tremendously slow since the Mosley situation and for some reason he hasn't been able to hurt anyone with a punch since he was caught with his corner loading his handwraps. Cotto was too good, too fast and too strong for Margarito and blasted away at his bad eye until the doctors were forced to stop it.

  • One got the feeling when Cotto said that Margarito is now nothing to him, he truly meant it. He's now poised for another huge payday with potential fights against Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, while Margarito is reduced to likely being an opponent for someone like Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. who just need a name opponent they can beat.

Miguel Cotto Beats Antonio Margarito By TKO Decision As Fight Stopped Due To Eye Injury

    Miguel Cotto Antonio Margarito Tko
NEW YORK -- Miguel Cotto battered a one-eyed Antonio Margarito over nine lopsided rounds then won a TKO decision amid confusion in the corner before they came out for the 10th on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Cotto (37-2-0) earned a punishing measure of payback for his loss to Margarito three years ago. With the New York crowd going wild for the Puerto Rican Cotto, he was never seriously threatened and retained his 154-pound title, shuttering Maragarito's right eye to cause the stoppage.
Margarito beat Cotto in July 2008, only to later have his career and reputation tarnished when he used illegal hand wraps before a loss to Shane Mosley. Margarito didn't box again for more than a year.
He needed surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone following a loss to Manny Pacquiao last year and considered retirement. The New York State Athletic Commission didn't license Margarito until Nov. 22 after ordering another examination of his eye. Cotto took quick aim on the eye and it was swollen shut in the seventh round.
Cotto believed Margarito also used illegal hand wraps in their first fight and claimed he had the photos to prove it.
Cotto stared down Margarito in his corner after the bout was stopped.
"Just to look at him and taste my victory on him," Cotto said. "He means nothing to me. I'm here with all my crowd and all my people. He means nothing to me."
The Tijuana Tornado stopped Cotto in the 11th round in Las Vegas in their first meeting. Cotto said he long resisted a rematch because he didn't want money going to an opponent who didn't fight fair.
Cotto took any issues of legality out of this one from the opening round. The sellout crowd at MSG honked horns, waved the Puerto Rico flag and absolutely went wild for all things Cotto – starting with his entrance to the opening strains of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army."
    Nothing could hold Cotto back.
Margarito laughed, smiled and even taunted Cotto after suffering several big blows. His demeanor didn't help him at the end of the seventh round, when he sat on his corner stool, his right eye shut. The crowd gasped then roared as the squeamish scene flashed on the big screen.
With one eye, Margarito gamely fought on, hoping for that one brutal blow that could change the fight. Half blind, he never had a chance. Ring doctor Anthony Curreri stopped the fight because of the eye even though 3 seconds ticked off in the 10th round. The fighters never met in the center of the ring.
"It came to the point there was no vision at all from the eye," Curreri said. "I think it would have been dangerous for him to go out there without any visual field. He did go quite a bit with the eye impaired."
Referee Steve Smoger did not know what the doctor wanted, causing confusion at the end.
Margarito insisted he could continue, though he was way behind on the scorecards.
"I told them how many numbers I had up," he said. "I knew from now on they were out to protect him because I was building (momentum)."

Kourtney and Kim Take New York': Seven Signs Kim's Marriage Was Doomed From the Start

The latest installment of Kardashian programming, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, premiered Sunday on E! and the basic premise of the series is simple: Kris and Kim's relationship was doomed from the start.
We've analyzed the evidence at hand, and broken down the episode into seven examples of why the writing was on the wall for these two. We then determined a winning party for each argument, tallied up the points, and have selected a loser to blame for the divorce. The evidence, below:

     EXHIBIT 1: FEELING MARRIED
    He says
: "This is so different. I really don't even feel married right now."
She says: "I hope you do."
Winner: Kim (Dude, you just got hitched on TV in front of millions. You're the most married guy in America right now). +1

    EXHIBIT 2: THE PEDICURE-RUINER
    She says:
"Ow! You just f------- ruined my pedicure! Seriously you...my whole toe just f------- broke in half!"
He says: "It's not even bleeding. Kim is a classic over-reactor."
She says: "You always do this sh-- to me, because you're so rough! OK, I know it's just a broken toenail, but this isn't the first time he's broken my toenail. He does it on a weekly basis."
Winner: Kim (Everyone knows how annoying it is to get a pedicure and have it smudge just hours later). +1

    EXHIBIT 3: FORCEFUL FRANKENSTEIN
    She says
: "You're so forceful!" Kim says, as he rips her camera out of her hands.
He says: "You're my wife now. It's gonna take a lot to get rid of me."
Winner: Kim (Being his wife is no excuse for pushy, abusive behavior). +1

    EXHIBIT 4: SPACE CONTROL
    He says:
"She put stuff in the closet...and I threw it on the floor. Just to make a statement."
She says: "I can't live with Kris! He's just like, such a slob. I'm not used to anyone in my space, let alone in my space and messing it all up."
Winner: Kris (Kim -- you're too pretty to be so neurotic. You might want to look into anti-anxiety meds). +1

    EXHIBIT 5: THE PARTY CIRCUIT
    He says
: "She talks me into going to this 'Welcome to New York' party, and she's not ready to go. I'm getting really annoyed."
She says: "It's this fun, glamorous party, and it's important that Kris is a part of this."
He says: "You care about that. I don't give a f---."
Winner: Kim (Come on man, you knew what you were getting into! If you didn't want to be paparazzi prey, you shouldn't have married a Kardashian). +1

    EXHIBIT 6: WHO'S THE BABY?
    He says
: "I can't live with two girls and a baby," (referring to Kourtney, Kim, and Mason).
She says: "I think that Kris is being a baby. You are so immature, I can't take it."
He says: "You can't take it? I can't take it."
Winner: Kris. (He's a newlywed and being asked to move into a hotel with her sister and a toddler. But at this point, I think they're both huge babies). +1

    EXHIBIT 7: NY vs. MINNESOTA
    He says
: "At the end of the day, this isn't working out. I gotta make a change."
She says: "We're gonna live, like, separate? Like long-distance marriage?"
He says: "I mean, I think it's what's best right now."
Winner: Kim (Whoever heard of a successful long-distance marriage in the NBA? I mean...have you seen Basketball Wives?) +1

    FINAL SCORE:Kim — 5
    Kris — 2
KIM WINS! The divorce is all Kris' fault...because we said so!

Cyber Monday outlook: big deals, record sales

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Did you skip the lines on Black Friday? There's still Cyber Monday -- and analysts are expecting an abundance of deals to bring in record online sales this year.
Andrew Lipsman, an industry analyst at data tracking firm ComScore, said sales for the one-day shopping event are projected to hit a record $1.2 billion this year.
Almost every major retailer plans on taking advantage of one of the hottest days to shop online. According to the Shop.org's eHoliday survey, eight out of 10 online retailers will offer promotions on Cyber Monday.
But the deals aren't just limited to Monday. Ahead of the big day, more than 90% of online merchants will be offering promotions over Thanksgiving weekend.
A survey by comparison shopping site PriceGrabber found that 39% of consumers who plan to shop over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend said they intended to do so on Cyber Monday. That's up 2% from last year.
It's a trend analysts are calling "couch commerce" -- more people want to spend money online from the comfort of their homes rather than head out to the shops.

    I braved Black Friday!

Lelah Manz, Chief Strategist of Commerce at technology distribution site Akamai, cited the rise of tablet computers in the last year as a major game-changer in e-commerce.
"If you think about when the concept of Cyber Monday was first born, it was a time when people had dial-up access at home -- it was the office place or the workplace where they could access sites," Manz said. "Now everyone has broadband access. People have tablets, they're able to get online earlier and at home, and retailers are trying to capture that mind share."
According to an IMB Coremetrics report, 15% of web traffic in the U.S. in November will stem from smart phones and tablets rather than PC's. In order to tap into that traffic, retailers are rolling out the deals early this year, said Manz.
As valuable ad space is snatched up by major retailers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, mid-sized retailers are leaking deals ahead of Cyber Monday to get their place in the spotlight too, said Graham Jones, General Manager of PriceGrabber.

    7 must-have Black Friday apps

"What we saw last year -- a lot of the medium size retailers, they didn't get in front of the consumers, so they are the ones leaking the deals earlier," Jones said. "The earlier these deals are coming out is a function of the retailers not wanting to be squeezed out of the limelight."
But don't expect online deals ahead of Cyber Monday to impact the big day. According to a Shop.org survey, nearly 60% of workers will turn online to shop for holiday gifts at work, and many of the retailers are waiting for Monday to push out some of the best promotions.
"Consumers have come to expect the absolute best online holiday deals on Cyber Monday," Pam Goodfellow, BIGresearch Consumer Insights Director, said in a release. BIGresearch is a marketing research firm that conducts surveys for the National Retail Federation and provides analysis of consumer behavior.
Online companies are still placing big bets on Cyber Monday and taking steps to prep for a day when online traffic is expected to spike. OpenSky, an online shopping platform that offers products curated by various celebrities and influential people -- from chef Tom Colicchio to fashion designer Cynthia Rowley -- has been ramping up efforts to make sure the site runs smoothly.
"We're expecting our biggest day ever - we have 10,000 new people joining OpenSky every day and we expect sales to be five times our largest day," OpenSky Founder John Caplan told CNNMoney. "We've made improvements to the site to make it run faster. We've added additional shipping options, gift wrapping, customer service staff and have all hands on deck from now through the holiday."
The company also plans to announce lifestyle guru Martha Stewart as a curator on the site - a move the six-month-old company hopes will boost interest in the biggest online shopping day of the year.  from http://cnn.com
