Apple Stores offering free 'Hour of Code' development classes this Wednesday

Apple this week will participate in a worldwide campaign from Code.org, offering children and teenagers a one-hour introduction to computer science class at its retail locations throughout the U.S.
Code

Apple's "Hour of Code Youth Workshops" are designed to "demystify code," the company said, showing that anyone can learn the basics of computer programming. Interested parties can find their nearest Apple Store on the company's website, where they can also sign up in advance.

The Hour of Code is an effort to have 10 million people participate during Computer Science Education Week, which runs from Dec. 9 through 15.

Those who want to teach their own Hour of Code can find tips and instructions on the official Code.org site. There, a number of tutorials are provided in as many as 20 languages to allow students to participate.

According to Code.org, nearly 2 million people have learned an Hour of Code so far, with nearly 55 million lines of code having been written by students.

Support for the Hour of Code goes well beyond Apple, with President Barack Obama and Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor endorsing the event. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has also pitched in to promote the event, as well as entertainers ranging from Ashton Kutcher to Shakira.

Code.org said on Monday that this year's Computer Science Education Week will include 5 million students in 35,000 schools from 167 countries participating in their first Hour of Code.

Hour of Code campaign urges students to learn to code (podcast)

It's pretty unusual to see an issue supported by President Obama and House Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor -- as well as Apple and Microsoft -- but they're all backing Hour of Code, which aims to get 5 million students in 33,000 classrooms around the world to learn at least one hour of computer science this week.
Sponsored by Code.org, the effort features entertainers Shakira, Ashton Kutcher, and Angela Bassett and athletes Chris Bosh, Warren Sapp, and Dwight Howard in videos supporting this cause. Tech luminaries including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Susan Wojcicki, and the late Steve Jobs also weigh in with messages on the importance of learning to code. Click here to view them.
During the course of the week there will be Hour of Code Learning events at every major Apple store in the U.S. along with all 51 Microsoft retail stores. This is also Computer Science Education Week. In a recorded interview (scroll down to listen), Code.org co-founder Ali Partovi said that "only 5 percent of U.S. schools teach computer science today, and that number is down from where it was 10 years ago." He said that computer science education peaked around 2003/2004 for a variety of reasons including budget along with state education standards. "In the vast majority of U.S. states computer science does not count toward graduation. It counts as an elective." As money gets tight, schools are cutting computer science along with art and music.
Pointing to the number of coding jobs not just in tech firms but hospitals, government, and all types of businesses, Partovi said that computer science "is the most empowering thing a kid could be learning, especially a kid from a disadvantage background." I didn't fact-check this, but he said that "a college graduate's first job in computer science makes more money than a doctor who's 10 years older." One thing I can't argue with is his statement that for disadvantaged youth, "the dream of becoming a computer programmer" is much more realistic than the odds of becoming an NBA player or a hip-hop star.

Intel intelligent systems transform experiences

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the market for intelligent systems is developing rapidly. Intel is leading the intelligent systems transformation with innovative solutions across the spectrum of computing, from retail and automotive systems to healthcare and communications solutions. Intel-based intelligent systems can help traffic flow more freely; assist shoppers in making informed purchases; enable doctors to treat patients even when separated by hundreds of miles or reduce energy consumption and waste.
Intelligent Systems Framework and Big Data
Today, connected devices often lack the security and manageability features needed to protect and manage the network of devices that connects to each other and the cloud. This network of intelligent systems makes up what is frequently called the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Intel Intelligent Systems Framework is an evolving set of interoperable solutions that will simplify and accelerate the deployment of the IoT.
The framework is designed to enable connectivity, manageability and security across these intelligent systems in a consistent and scalable manner. These billions of connected devices will generate an enormous volume of data or “big data” and there is tremendous value to be extracted from this data produced from the IoT.
The Intelligent Systems Framework will allow system owners to shift the development resources toward converting the massive volumes of data into actionable information. Harnessing and combining both machine-generated and user-created data holds the potential to improve lives, spur incredible advances in productivity, and create new industry-shifting services.
Powering Intelligent Systems
Intelligent systems possess high-performance compute capabilities needed to manage and analyse data collected, and transform it into valuable business intelligence. Intel processors, from the low-power Intel Atom processor to the graphic-rich Intel core processor to the high performance Intel Xeon processor, provide energy-efficient performance to handle the explosion of data created by millions of intelligent systems. Intel brings together essential solutions for intelligent systems, including security, manageability and network connectivity.
Connectivity
Intel delivers increasing performance per watt to ensure that Intel processors will simplify the connectivity of intelligent systems and enable businesses and network operators to move intelligence to the network edge. Intel provides connectivity solutions for heterogeneous networks including wide area networking, WiFi and cellular communications.
Security and Manageability
Whether intelligent systems are working with personal or enterprise data, security is top priority.
Intel intelligent systems ensure the following security features:
-The 3rd generation Intel core processors deliver improved security with new features such as Intel OS Guard to detect and prevent malware and Intel Secure Key to protect media, data and assets from loss.
-The 3rd generation Intel core processor family also continues to feature Intel Active Management -technology (Intel AMT) for remote diagnosis and management of problems and repairs without the need for costly on-site service visits. Wind River provides embedded operating system and middleware including security and manageability solutions for intelligent systems.
Intel intelligent systems continue to transform experiences
Intelligent systems will continue to demand more performance to bring richer experiences and become more fundamental to our daily lives. Intel is working with industry leaders across many market segments to create a seamless fabric of cloud-connected intelligent systems.

Panacea launches commercial cloud and ICT service

Panacea Systems, an end to end ICT solutions consultant and provider, has launched commercial cloud and complete ICT service for the first time in Bangladesh.
In a recent study, it has been found that in Bangladesh, data centre services are comparatively cheaper than the global markets and the integration of cloud can reduce this cost further.
The company aims to bring the following products in the local market during the first phase:
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – Gaia, Panacea’s Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), delivers a range of security oriented, cost-effective cloud services.
Software as a Service (SaaS) – Neer, Panacea’s Software as a Service (SaaS), is the model in which an application is hosted as a service to customers who access it via the internet. When the software is hosted off-site, the customer doesn’t have to maintain it or support it. The provider does all the patching and upgrades as well as keeping the infrastructure running.
With Panacea’s end to end solutions consultancy and reference architectures, a organisation can understand the benefits of cloud computing, increase IT infrastructure, gain flexibility and have more choices on how to take business to new heights and get all of that with minimum capital expenditures and hassle.
It also provides Device Solution, a custom solution that offers energy efficiency, expert service and create true business value minimising cost.
Panacea Systems Ltd aspires to become not only a local leading Cloud service provider but also to offer its economic services to the rest of the world.

The 3D printing pen

While 3D printers are still too expensive for most of us, a kickstarter project is hoping to fund a cheaper alterative -- a pen capable of drawing 3D structures.

Called 3Doodler, the $50 pen writes using a plastic wire that hardens almost instantly on being cooled by a fan built in to the pen's tip.

It is hoped it will go on sale later this year, and the firm has already given prototypes to artists to create everything from 3D animals to reconstructions of the Eiffel tower.

"Everyone knows how to use a pen, so we designed a 3D printing pen," the firm said.

"If you can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air you can use a 3Doodler. As you draw, plastic comes out of the pen, is cooled by an integrated fan, and solidifies right in front of you.

"You can draw on any surface and lift it up into the air to create your own 3D objects," the farm added.

The device has been created by a company called WobbleWorks, which is currently seeking $30,000 funding through Kickstarter.

The creators say it can also be used to repair items through using it as a plastic welding tool.

It has also given artists prototypes of the pen, many of whom are using it to create 3D doodles they then sell online via etsy.com

What is waoIndia?
waoIndia is a new innovative, international and FREE English based service that allows advertisers to reach thousands of potential customers by displaying their ad on our, "View Ads" page.

Signup Here
How does it work?
You view websites in a few seconds via the "View Ads" page. Once the few seconds is up, you'll either get a green tick sign or a red 'X'. The green tick sign means you've earned money for the visit and the 'X' means you have not earned money for the visit. You'll get red X's when you have more than one website from the "View Ads" page open. When this happens, you get no credit.
Can other people in my household join?
As long as they each have their own computer, AlertPay/Paypal account and e-mail address. As far as cheating goes, our software detects users who create fictitious accounts and use the same computer so if someone else in your household wants to join and will legitimately use their account; you shouldn't be flagged for abuse.
Can I have more than one account?
No. There is no need to maintain more than one account. If you've lost your login information, you can request to have it sent to your e-mail address. If you are caught with more then one account open (we have a very strict auditing process before payments are sent) your account(s) will be terminated, your ip address(es) will be banned and you will not receive any earnings.
My network, school or ISP all use the same IP addresses, can I join?
Yes, this is fine. The same general rule applies from the previous question.
How much money can I make?
There is no limit in the amount of websites you visit or referrals that you obtain. Your earning possibilities are virtually endless.
How do I refer others?
Use your unique referral code found within the user area "My Stats".
I can't see any ads!
If you see no ad links on the "View Ads" page but you DO see stats on the right hand side then you need to disable all antivirus and antispyware/adware programs. If this doesn't work, try cleaning your cache, temp files, cookies, etc. If you're still having problems after all of that, try changing or updating your browser.
My stats aren't updating!
This is either because your browser is saving the page in it's cache or you're not waiting for the dollar sign to appear after the timer is complete. Try cleaning your cache, temp files, cookies, etc. If you're still having problems after all of that, try changing or updating your browser.
I keep getting "Invalid code entered." when I try to register or login!
First, make sure you are correctly typing in the verification code. If you are typing in the correct code and still having problems then it's something to do with your browser caching the previously used session image. Try cleaning your cache, temp files, cookies, etc. If you're still having problems after all of that, try changing or updating your browser.
How often are the statistics updated?
Stats are updated immediately.
How do I get paid?
If you have the minimum amount accumulated, you can click on your account balance within your stats area and it will submit your request. Currently, we only make payments via Paypal/AlertPay/Check. We will soon be using other methods of payment.
When do I get paid?
You can request for payment once you're account balance is the minimum amount accumulated. Your payment will be processed and issued via AlertPay/Paypal/Check/CreditCard as early as possible.
What is AlertPay/Paypal?
AlertPay/Paypal is the payment processing solution that we use to pay members. Your AlertPay/Paypal address is the e-mail address you use to register with AlertPay/Paypal. You can get a free AlertPay account at www.alertpay.com. You can get a free Paypal account at www.paypal.com.
Why did I get paid less then what I was owed?
If you have a business account with AlertPay/Paypal, they charge a 2.9%-3.5% transfer fee plus an additional $0.30-$0.35 base fee when you receive funds.
How can I cancel my account?
Inactive accounts are automatically cancelled after certain time.
Why I have to click twice to see the green tick?
Check your antivirus, antispyware/adware programs, your browser settings for cookies and java script acceptance. If this doesn't work, try cleaning your cache or reboot your computer.

Windows 8 setup: Now with fewer clicks!

Microsoft has streamlined the upgrade and setup process for Windows 8.
(Credit: Microsoft)
People frustrated by the upgrade and setup process in prior versions of Windows may find a more user-friendly experience in Windows 8.
Ensuring that Windows installs properly across a variety of hardware and software configurations has always been a major challenge, and one that Microsoft has never solved to the satisfaction of all users.
Microsoft has already taken some big steps forward in this respect with Windows 7. Its next version of Windows promises further improvements, as described in the latest edition of the Building Windows 8 blog by Christa St. Pierre from Microsoft's setup and deployment team:
For Windows 8, our goal was to continue to improve reliability while also improving the installation experience and raw performance. Not only did we want it to be rock solid, but also faster and easier to use.

Microsoft created the Windows 8 setup process with two types of users in mind:
  1. People who want to easily upgrade without any hassle; and
  2. People who want to run a clean install and tap into advanced options to control their disk and partition settings.
One of the first enhancements can be found in the delivery of Windows 8.
Beyond offering the new OS on a standard boxed DVD, Microsoft will also make it available to customers via the Web. Users can download and even install the product directly online from start to finish.
The Web setup process also integrates the product key, sparing people from having to manually enter it. Users who want more control over the installation can also run an advanced setup from a DVD or USB key.Microsoft has also combined several tools to simplify the Windows 8 upgrade. In Windows 7, the company offered both an upgrade advisor to tell users which applications were compatible with the new OS and Windows Easy Transfer to save and restore key files and settings. Now both tools are fully integrated into the Windows 8 setup.
So a user who upgrades to Windows 8 will encounter one single end-to-end process and as few as 11 clicks, compared with the four different products and up to 60 screens required to jump to Windows 7.
Windows 8 users should also see the entire upgrade fly by faster. For Windows 7, each needed file and document would be moved one by one and then moved back once the installation was done. The Windows 8 installation will move entire folders instead, thereby speeding up the process. Other tweaks also promise a quicker upgrade experience.
Finally, advanced users and IT professionals alike will be able to choose from a range of options to give them full control over their upgrades and migrations.
"With Windows 8 setup we have greatly improved both speed and ease of use, while still retaining all of the advanced setup functionality that many customers will demand," St. Pierre explained. "We have integrated what was once many separate steps for people to perform when preparing and starting their setup into a streamlined user experience, with a fast and reliable setup engine under the hood."

25 Worst Passwords of 2011 [STUDY]

Pro tip: choosing “password” as your online password is not a good idea. In fact, unless you’re hoping to be an easy target for hackers, it’s the worst password you can possibly choose.
“Password” ranks first on password management application provider SplashData’s annual list of worst internet passwords, which are ordered by how common they are. (“Passw0rd,” with a numeral zero, isn’t much smarter, ranking 18th on the list.)
The list is somewhat predictable: Sequences of adjacent numbers or letters on the keyboard, such as “qwerty” and “123456,” and popular names, such as “ashley” and “michael,” all are common choices. Other common choices, such as “monkey” and “shadow,” are harder to explain.
As some websites have begun to require passwords to include both numbers and letters, it makes sense varied choices, such as “abc123″ and “trustno1,” are popular choices.
SplashData created the rankings based on millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers. Here is the complete list:
  • 1. password
  • 2. 123456
  • 3.12345678
  • 4. qwerty
  • 5. abc123
  • 6. monkey
  • 7. 1234567
  • 8. letmein
  • 9. trustno1
  • 10. dragon
  • 11. baseball
  • 12. 111111
  • 13. iloveyou
  • 14. master
  • 15. sunshine
  • 16. ashley
  • 17. bailey
  • 18. passw0rd
  • 19. shadow
  • 20. 123123
  • 21. 654321
  • 22. superman
  • 23. qazwsx
  • 24. michael
  • 25. football
SplashData CEO Morgan Slain urges businesses and consumers using any password on the list to change them immediately.
“Hackers can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords,” Slain says. “Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft.”

The company provided some tips for choosing secure passwords in a statement:
  • 1. Vary different types of characters in your passwords; include numbers, letters and special characters when possible.
  • 2. Choose passwords of eight characters or more. Separate short words with spaces or underscores.
  • 3. Don’t use the same password and username combination for multiple websites. Use an online password manager to keep track of your different accounts.
Are these lists helpful? Do you need to rethink any of your password choices? Let us know in the comments.

An Introduction to Google+

The tech media has spent the vast majority of the last week focused on Google’s newest product, an ambitious platform called Google+ that the company hopes will break through their dry spell in the social arena and make them competitive.
It’s early days — for many people it’s next to impossible to even get in — but things are looking positive. The app has been met by a largely positive reception and my stream shows no sign of slowing down as users keep posting after the novelty wears off.

Circles

Circles is a foundational feature of Google+, and it’s what makes it so different from other social networks — and bridges the gaps between them. With Circles, you control who you share what information with, making mutual relationships where intimate information can be shared, Facebook-style, a possibility, while still allowing the unidirectional model of Twitter that allows you to follow people you find interesting without them having to follow you back.
The interface for organizing your Circles is pretty cool too, but I don’t think it’s the animations that’s blowing people away.
If I want to make a post that is viewable only by my family members, I can. If I want something to be viewable by the public, that’s possible too. There are no “all or nothing” scenarios here as there are with Facebook. This means Google can perform the roles of both Twitter and Facebook and puts it in a very powerful position.

The stream is where you can view incoming information. It’s much like the Facebook news feed or your Twitter stream, but Circles gives you control over what you’re looking at here — it’s not just for deciding who to share content with.
In the screenshot below I’m viewing content that has been shared by people I know from my role at The Next Web. I can easily jump between Friends, Family, Acquaintances, or the Following Circle that’s like a bucket for interesting people I’ve never met.
As is the de facto standard today, the stream updates in real-time. There are some issues that Google engineers are actively working to fix — old posts tend to float to the top more easily than on other networks.

Sparks

Sparks is billed as one of the main features of Google+ but doesn’t get as much airtime at the moment. That’s because it’s one of the few areas where Google seems to have not invested much effort into creating something truly useful. Sparks are feeds of information based on defined topics, but if you take a look in the screenshot below where I’m looking at the pre-defined Spark called “Films” there’s no curation to the content. The second result has something to do with a sniper shooting a civilian who was filming him in Syria — tragic, but not exactly what I’m thinking of when I want information about recent films.
This feature could be a lot better. It could make discovering and subsequently sharing interesting information a breeze, but not until the results are much better. This would be a perfect place for some sort of integration with Google Reader, where the content has already been curated by both publishers and subscribers.

Hangouts

Hangouts is one of the most impressive parts of Google+. The underlying technology isn’t that incredible — we’ve had Skype video conferencing for years. But Hangouts can handle ten or twenty people at a time without problems, and more importantly, it’s not the technology but the execution that makes this feature impressive. Video calls need to be arranged and specific people need to be called in, but with Hangouts, anyone from selected Circles can drop in and out. It’s an evolving social space like your local bar, not a rigid call structure, and that distinction is important. It makes Hangouts pretty revolutionary.

API

No doubt you’re wondering: when’s the API coming? Google says it will be here soon, and if they’re telling the truth they’ll have introduced an API much faster than Facebook did. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of apps come out of Google+ that weren’t possible using other social platforms.
There have been clues that Google+ Games is coming, and rumors that there’s a partnership with social gaming giant Zynga involved. Will Google+ be the next platform for casual game developers to tackle? We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m leaving at the first hint of Farmville spam.
What do you think about Google+?
