Amazon Affiliate Program Review

This post may contain affiliate links. All opinions are 100% my own.

The Amazon Associates Program is a popular way to make money as a blogger. The product selection is plentiful and this is one of the most trusted retailers on the internet. If you are just getting started with the Amazon affiliate program, here is what you need to know.

Amazon Affiliate Program Review

Commission Structure – Amazon refers to commissions as “Advertising Fees.” The standard advertising fee starts at 4% for most items, though a few of their verticals (partner stores) may be as high as 15%. For most Amazon products, there is a Performance Fee Structure based on your sales volume.
  • 1-6 products sold – 4%
  • 7-30 – 6%
  • 31-110 – 6.5%
  • 111-320 – 7%
  • 321-630 – 7.5%
  • 631-1570 – 8%
  • 1571-3130 – 8.25%
  • 3131+ – 8.5%
A few product categories have caps. Desktops and laptops are capped at $25 per item. Video-on-Demand and MP3 items are capped at $1.50 per item.
Payment Methods – Amazon offers several ways to receive your commissions. Payments are made approximately 60 days from the end of the month that you hit your threshold. (Ex. If you make payout in January, you will receive your payment towards the end of March.)
  • Amazon Gift Card/Certificate – $10 minimum
  • Direct Deposit – $10 minimum
  • Check – $100 minimum
Pros
  • Easy to implement, even for beginner affiliate marketers
  • Huge variety of products to promote
  • Well-known and trusted merchant
  • You can link to individual products easily rather than having only a generic creative available.
Cons
The cookie duration is short – 24 hours UpdatedNot so fast! You can
  • actually receive credit for sales for up to 89 days.
  • Some complain that the commission rate is low. However, I find it comparable to other big merchants for which I am an affiliate.
  • The Amazon Associates Program is prohibited in some states. However, Skimlinks is a way around this that I have mentioned on this blog several times in the past.
I personally love the Amazon affiliate program. My conversion rate is far higher than what I see for the majority of the programs I promote. This likely has much to do with Amazon being a familiar name in the online world. I’m sure the fact that they take PayPal doesn’t hurt.
I have also found that people not only purchase things other than what you promoted in most cases, they often purchase more than one item. Amazon usually has free shipping on orders over $35. This works in your favor. As a shopper, if I have $29 worth of items in my cart and my options are receive $29 worth of stuff and pay $6 in shipping or find another $6 item that I want and get free shipping, I’m finding another small item to add to my purchase.

You know the holiday shopping season is here already. I’m planning on Amazon being my new best friend for the next few months.
